The Chemical Maze

One of the big questions that comes up for people when they’re starting out Going Additive Free is how to start and how to know what’s ok and what’s not. It can be really daunting and sometimes fall into that “too hard basket” because understanding additives and what goes into our food is something that is confusing for many of us.

But learning about additives and how they can be harmful is one of the ways we can become more informed so that we can make informed choices on what we choose to consume and eliminate from our diets or our cosmetic shelves. Bill Statham has written a book which is a fantastic resource called The Chemical Maze. Essentially this pocket sized book is a shopping companion that you can easily refer to whilst you’re out shopping. Not only does it list food additives but it also has a section on safe and unsafe cosmetic ingredients.

In addition to the book, you can now also get The Chemical Maze App which can be downloaded via the AppStore for iPhone or GooglePlay for Android.

We have a couple of copies of The Chemical Maze Shopping Companion to give away to two readers. Just comment below telling us why you’d like a copy by the 29th January for your chance to get your hands on one.

We have (myself & my mum) a history of food allergies in my family, and live in a constant cloud of coal dust. I’d love to understand more about the food I am giving my little ones and how I can control those factors to give them the best health, as well as what I am putting on my (and their) skin .

I’d love a copy of the Chemical Maze. My son has been diagnosed with ADHD and we have found that cutting out additives makes a massive difference to his behaviour and ability to concentrate at school. I feel so overwhelmed when I’m out shopping for food for him that it would be great to keep a handy book like this in my handbag at all times!

you summed it up with food additives being in the ‘too hard basket’ up until now! i would love a copy of the Chemical Maze to kick start my young families new year mission of not just eating better but being more mindful of what we are putting in to our bodies! Kate x

I have two children with severe eczema and at Christmas time I let them eat whatever they wanted which made their eczema flared up really badly. So just after Christmas I cut out all processed foods, sugars and colours. It’s been a month now and i’m actually surprised because their eczema is much better now (one of my children has stopped wearing wraps!). I had no idea that all those things were having such an impact on their skin. It has been a real eye opener and now i want to go completely additive free so this book will definitely help me make the best choices for my family.
